About the book (mouse over to pause)

"The originality and practice changing ideas in this book should earn it a place on the New York Times best-seller list. It combines a basic explanation of the autonomic nervous system with practical applications to the problems of 18 real life patients, many of whom were unable to find successful treatments from numerous specialists. It is written by a neuropsychiatrist determined to solve these puzzles, and restore acceptable functionality to her patients."
"There is a trend toward combining psychiatry and general medicine. This book does that in a seamless fashion, with interesting results. Look at the table of contents and some of the neurologic graphics on the book previews on the site."
"Here is a book that first describes mainstream psychiatric treatment, then adds a unique focus on common problems that fall through the cracks between internal medicine and psychiatry. These are such problems as fluctuating high and low blood pressure, unremitting fatigue, dull headaches correlated with standing or eating, and a sluggish gastrointestinal tract. These are addressed at both brain and peripheral nerve levels."
"Why not treat cognitive issues of all etiologies by using the physiology of the brain's normal neurotransmitters, and also mimic some of the peripheral neurotransmitters like those in the gastrointestinal tract?"
"This book explains the underlying neural pathways of high blood pressure, pain, fatigue, autoimmunity, headache, sleep disorders, memory, traumatic brain injury, bipolar disorder, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), and ADD(attention deficit disorder). Novel treatments are introduced. No one should continue to be unaware of this knowledge and its impact on contemporary medical/psychiatric practice. At $20, it is a valuable addition to your library. There is no other book like it."
"Psychiatric articles frequently lament that residual symptoms of depression and other disorders remain after treatment. Read this book to see why these residual symptoms remain, and what can be done about them."
"This book comprises a revolutionary approach to psychiatric disorders. For too long psychiatry has been treated as if the brain and the body are separate entities. For example, people with panic disorder are not "crazy". They have autonomic dysfunctions, and it is time these were recognized as such. Can people affect their organs by their thoughts and feelings? Clearly they can, and this book tells you how, and what to do about it. The case managements are unique, and are from the consulting room of a practicing neuropsychiatrist."
"What beta blockers have been found to prevent metastases of what cancers? What cognitive enhancers have been seen to improve memory in patients with multiple etiologies of memory loss? What medications can potentially improve cognition, but worsen mood? There is no cookbook approach to treatment in psychiatry, and every patient handles drugs differently, based on genetics and metabolic drug interactions. Furthermore, there are not evidence based, ie, double blind, placebo controlled treatment studies, for all the problems out there, and some have to be handled case by case, by trial and error. This book gives you a blueprint for that, with 15 complex cases and specialized treatments. It is written by a rogue neuropsychiatrist in private practice, not constrained by some bureaucracy to follow the beaten path."
"This book fills a gaping void between psychiatry and medicine and between psychiatry and neurology. Brain circuits and the involuntary nervous system are the bricks and mortar that close the gap."
"Two women with refractory headache went to numerous specialists without resolution of the headache. Treatment of orthostatic hypotension, a major autonomic dysfunction, finally made daily life comfortable again (Chapters 13 and 15). A 64 year old man had longterm fatigue continuing after treatment of sleep apnea and control of cardiovascular problems. Read Chapter 9, and understand how the diagnosis and treatment of dysautonomia (malfunction of the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system) helped him. A feast of knowledge awaits you in this book."
"If you always wanted to listen in at a psychiatrist's office, here is your chance, with 18 challenging patients with diagnoses from mania to suicidality to pornography addiction."
"Aging (and environmental entities) cause deficiencies in the autonomic nervous system. This book describes replacing the deficiencies with neurochemicals mimicking those in the healthy body. Peripheral nerve and brain deficiencies may be connected."
"Have you ever wondered how successful psychiatrists are at treating chronic mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and schizophrenia? This book shows how different approaches get results."
"This book takes a subject that most doctors ignore, and shows how treating the various aspects of the autonomic nervous system resolves previously misunderstood and unresponsive symptoms."
"How do the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems coordinate or oppose each other in organ systems like the heart and blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, sexual organs, immune system, brain, and endocrine system? What happens when the sympathetic and/or the parasympathetic system is deficient or dysregulated? How can we restore balance in the systems? Here is a book which answers these complex questions in an easily understood fashion through case management of 15 patients. There is a summation chapter discussing the findings in all 15. Multiple treatment approaches by specialists failed to accomplish resolution of symptoms until the autonomic problems were addressed."
